That would depend on the fish - you need a tank that will be able to house them at their adult size. A low wide tank is generally preferable over a tall narrow one, because you get more surface area for oxygen exchange at the water surface.
If the fish are tropical, a heater and thermometer to check the temperature. The heater should be 5 watts for every gallon of your tank volume, more if you'll need to raise the water temperature for your fish more than 10o. You'll also want water conditioner to remove chlorine/chloramine from you tapwater to make it safe for the fish.
A filter rated for your tank size. Gravel for the bottom, plus any decorations you might like (optional, unless you are getting fish that need hiding places).
Maintenance supplies; gravel vacuum, net, water test kit.
A light hood or glass cover to keep the fish from jumping out.
Fish and fish food.

You'll want to get them the biggest tank that you can buy for them, any fish always wants more room even if people think a betta can live in less water then you would give a rabbit in one day.
This is the main page.

This is the link to the articles, read all of them before you start your tank.

That's the site I use more then most anything else when I'm going to add a new fish to a tank or if I plan on starting up another tank and want to make sure I remember to do everything right.
Never add the fish right away, they wont last long even if you use drops in the water.
Read that site over and you'll have a great tank going in no time.
Also search the fish name before you get one, pet store people normally don't know what they're talking about. Angel fish will attack many different fish yet I heard one pet store worker say they were great, and on the other side most pet stores never give bettas more then a little jar of water when no female would ever attack another female in a normal 20 gallon tank, and I never breed fish without putting at least one or more male bettas in to play father to other fish's eggs and babies. Fish also can live for many years normally at least 3 or 4, or some like the eels I own past 20, so make sure to look up your fish for sure.
I also fully agree with everything that amtv120471 said, the only thing extra I would say is that brine shrimp or blood worms (frozen or live) are the kind of live food that is best for most every fish.

Well speaking from experience i went with a 10 gallon starter kit and i found out i couldn't get as many fish in i as i wanted to. So i Went out and brought a 29 gallon starter kit and i am very happy with that.. I have freshwater fish like guppies, playties, couple different kinds of tetra's, female Betta corydoris and some African dwarf frogs. So i would suggest getting at least a 29 gallon starter kit the one i got had a filter and the heater and a hooded light in it. So than all i had to do was buy what i waned for deco. in the tank like the gravel and silk flowers. I got my tank at walmart and it seem to be the cheapest place around my area to buy a tank. Hope this helps. OH yeah if you get a big enough tank and you get community fish. You should think about getting some African dwarf frog. They are really active and fun to watch . The only time they come to the top of the tank is to get a breath of air than there right back to the bottom. They like lots of hidding places. Well good luck

It depends on the fish's adult size. Arowana for instance, you need a good L6ft x W2ft x H2ft or bigger for them to fully grow to its maximum size. Bettas, minimum is 5 US galon. Live plants, 80F heater, 10 galon Tetra whisper filtration pump. Live food. Good luck.
