The sod growers and landscape contractors will tell you that lawns have a limited life span and that the best way to improve your lawn would be to dig it up,rototill it with fertilizer, and install new sod. As a landscape contractor with forty years of experience I would suggest an answer that would be far cheaper in the near term and more fiscally conservative in the long term. The best way to improve your lawn generally speakinjg would be to reduce your coverage and replant with drought -tolerant landscaping depending upon its current condition and your location. Lawns are extremely thirsty and labor intensive. You may choose to replace all or portions of it with beautiful alternatives that thrive on neglect. For the portions you elect to maintain, reseed with the same specis and add locally available lawn amendments.

sign up with a lawn company like Scotts or TruGreen Chemlawn. I use them and believe it or not they are cheaper than doing it yourself.

use a weed and seed mixture on it. runs about $40/bag for 1500 sq. ft.. don't always mow in the same direction every time, it helps it to grow in thick and rich if you don't.
