well, when none have been touched yet, i think it was the one all the way to the left, then the one to the right of that, then the one to the right of that.

You mean the one that goes:

There are 3 switches downstairs and one light bulb upstairs, how can you find out which switch activates the light when you can only check the bulb once?

Here's the answer:
Flip on the first switch for several minutes, then turn it off, turn on the second switch and go into the room. If the light is on, then the second switch activates the light. If the light is off but warm, then it is the first switch. If the light is off and cold, then it is the third switch.
