My gf is having breast reduction surgery. The issue we're facing is that I live 3 hours away from her, and I am the only logistic person that will be able to care for her the following week. I will not be able to take off from work that week, so she is wanting me to drive her down on Sunday, (she is having the surgery on a Thursday) and returning on Thursday of the following week. Would this be a safe thing to do??

I will be there for the surgery, as well as the day after (wouldn't let her go under without me there!), so those two days are no concern. This is also why I can't take off work the following week, as we've used all my vacation time this year.

It will be fine as long as she is not driving.

Get two pillows for her, one for her back, and one for her chest to protect it from any bumps or the seatbelt strap.

Also just in case she is nauseous, bring a trash can so she can puke in.

Its good to see a guy posting about his g/f!!! :) Kudos to you!

From a safety standpoint, it shouldn't be a problem. The only issue I can think of is that the surgeon will probably want to take her staples out sometime in that time frame.

From a comfort issue, she may not feel up to a 3 hour car ride that soon after surgery. Make sure her pain meds are handy, and if she can recline the front seat and take a nap while you're driving, that may help.

The biggest issue she'll have to deal with is getting home from the hospital. They won't let her drive herself home; she will have to have a driver, and most hospitals won't allow a patient to go home in a regular taxi after surgery. It would help if she could find a local friend or co-worker to take her home from the hospital, and better still if she had someone to stay with her at least the first day. She won't be able to drive or make legal decisions for 24 hours after surgery, and she will need to stop at the pharmacy to get her prescription filled before she goes home.

Kudos to you for being willing to take care of her, especially considering you have to make a 6 hour round trip to do it. You're a keeper. :)

yes, it's safe and will better for her most likely. the back pain and extra weight is hard to live with. it's her choice, keep her happy, support her (well less of her now) and take care of her.

and ask to apply ointments and stuff.
