When they're swimming in this position, they have a swim bladder problem. The swim bladder is a sac that's filled with gas so they "float" in the water, but yours has too much gas at the moment. This can be caused by their diet, or by an infection.

Diet is the easiest to treat. Give him a cooked pea with the outer skin removed. If he's small, you can smash the pea so it's easier to eat. You may want to soak any flakes or pellets you give him for a while, because dry food and cause this, and add some cooked or frozen vegetables to the diet occassionally. See swim bladder disorder in this link for foods to try: http://www.fish-disease.net/diseases.htm

probably suffering from poor water quality from being in a bowl. swim bladder problems can be caused by internal infections, so it may very well be a swim bladder problem. but if it's a swim bladder problem caused by an internal infection you'll need antibiotic food. try the pea first though, meds are very hard on fish.

get your goldfish a real tank, goldfish get huge. even the smallest kind get 8"-10" but the common thin kind get well over 18". not to mention goldfish produce a ton of waste.

I hate to say this, but I think your finned friend may be going to a better place. Goldfish don't usually live a long life. Two to three years is the average. You may want to try a cichlid if you want a fish that will grow and have a longer live span.

I have had goldfish for years.....Copperhead is the correct response.....also be sure to salt your water.... 2 years...thats a great record for an aquarium fish. My recent two are 7 months and doing fine. 3/4 water changes every 3 weeks, total teardown about every 3-4 months and be sure to follow feeding directions for the type of food you feed. They are often VERY different. i.e. Wardleys vs. TetraFin.....Hope it gets better......I've seen them do so....
