...some of the best food comes from those cheap little places that cost you 5-6 bucks for a meal that 2 people could share?

And then you go to some gourmet restaurant and they have tiny portions of weird food that's not even that great for like 30 bucks... what's up with that?

i've experienced that as well. small places often have cooks that know how to make the good old home made stuff. Common things that we all love to eat that taste as if your mom made it.
the gourmet places have fancy chefs that spent a lot of money going to culinary school and pride themselves on inventing interesting new dishes. sometimes they are yummy (pulled-pork stuffed squash blossoms from bobby flay's place in NYC) other times they are too fancy for my liking.

sometimes i just want a great burrito or sandwich, nothing fancy

Grasshopper there are many mysteries out there, but I firmly believe that one: not all gourmet food places are so 'cheap' in their offering. Just expensive. There are very good and tasty places serving gourmet meals in the Los Angeles area as well as San Francisco. One is Gorikee in Woodland Hills, L.A. Big portions with a touch of Corde De
Blieu cooking and a tinge of garlic. Second; not all cheap food places taste good.

It's all about money. They want to charge more and they tend to attract the "with-it" crowd. Thrifty people who do not care to be "with it" and care for great food and enjoy food would go to the cheaper places you mentioned. Also the gourmet restaurants are riding on their own famous names, I think. That's my opinion.
You pay for a well- known place.

It's just the way it is . . . so support the little mom and pop places and don't go to the fancy "gourmet" restaurants!
