as the river is flowing into a larger one, it is giving a gift (its water) to her so convincingly it is called a tributary stream to the latter ; but if a river is originating from a larger one (becouse of topography
-including obstacles-and gradient and direction of slope of the terrain in question ) and rolling down in another direction (some time it may be parallel to its mother ) it is called a distributary of main river, as it is distributing her mother's water . You can see easily distributaries on a map of delta ,as of Sundarban . Tributaries are common on mountaneous terrain and in a synform . Yamuna is a tributary stream of Ganga as it is giving its water to the latter on Allahabad at Sangam(the holy confluence).
