Nothing its an old wives tale

I find that if you're cervix has thinned out that having sex is more likely to put you in labor than castor oil. First of all, it's not good for you. If it does put you in labor it's because it gives you the runs and causes you to be dehydrated. I don't think I would have taken it when I was pregnant if I had known it could cause injury to my baby. With my first pregnancy I tried everything to go in labor--running, bumpy car rides, exercising, etc. And I also took mineral oil. It did nothing until after my son was born, at which point I poohed all over myself in the hospital bed. With my youngest son, I had taken castor oil with Juicy Juice and absolutely nothing happened other than stomach cramps. Before taking it again, I was warned it could be harmful to the baby so I read up on it online and asked a doctor. The dehydration is unhealthy and can make your labor more intense. He also informed me that you should not take any laxatives at all when pregnant, which is essentially what both mineral and castor oil are. He said that the only safe thing is prunes. That being said I know if I have another baby, I will tough it out rather than do something I will feel guilty about if something happens to my child.

Why does a castor oil induction work?
Castor oil stimulates the bowels in the same way an enema would. For some unexplained reason, when the bowel is stimulated to empty in this way, the uterus is also stimulated to empty. A study in Alternative Therapies, January 2000, reported that 57.7% of the mothers given castor oil began labor in the specified time period while only 4.3% of the mothers not given castor oil went into labor.

2-6 Hours after drinking the castor oil, the mother will experience diarrhea and should begin contractions.

Castor Oil doesn't necessarily put a woman into labor!
Castor oil makes you sh!t like a mad woman. The cramping of the intestines may/may not create contractions. But none the less, diarrhea leaves you dehydrated which isn't good if you should go into labor. Not recommended as way to bring on labor.

Nothing about castor oil puts a woman into labour. It's a myth that is perpetuated because by the time a woman is wanting to try such a horrible 'fix', she's pretty close to her time anyway. If she happens to go into labour within a day or so, she'll claim it was the castor oil ... or spicey food she ate ... or live goldfish she swallowed ;-)

It's actually a rather unhealthy thing to do. Wait. Your body will go into labour when it's ready.

Castor oil will only give you the runs. It is not a proven or safe and effective remedy to trigger labor. You will only cause yourself lots of cramping from bowel movements and your baby could also release bowels inside you making it dangerous. If you are looking to trigger early labor (38-39 weeks), lots of sex and nipple stimulation is the only safe method. The baby will come when ready!

Beats me!! I have no idea how its works but my mother used it with my sister. She took it then she went walking on the track for 30 min came home had the ruins, but it caused her to have uterine contractions and 2 hours later my sister was born.

Seriously, I think castor oil gives you crampish diarhea, and I think crampish diarhea can "trick" your body into going into labor.

I'm not sure, but I think that's the basis behind that.
