Public Infrastructure (Roads, jails, schools, water, etc.) regulation of standards, laws to protect you, tax structure to encourage industry and earnings, defense, etc.

Read the Constitution.
It explains the duties.
Impeach all politicians that are not doin what the Constitution says is their duty and you'll see a big difference!
Basically they should be preventing anarchy. That's limited government.
anything else is just a power grab.
