At 2 months my dr. actually recommended it because my daughter had acid reflux and had projectile vomiting. I would put a teaspoon of oatmeal cereal in her first bottle every morning. It helped a lot with the vomiting and spit up. It's not recommended to ever put cereal in a bottle, however I guess every baby and dr. is different and has different needs.

I never gave rice cereal period, I used the baby oatmeal, there are more vitamins and minerals in the oatmeal, and I never put it in a bottle, I would make a tiny bit, like a tablespoon of cereal and then I would feed it off the spoon, it was hard for them, being they don't know how. If you put it in the bottle it can cause gas and I would rather take 10 minutes a couple times a day to feed it off the spoon. It helps them get used to the feeling and sensation of eating anway. I always did it after a bottle, so as not to fill them up and I started this about 1 month with all my children, none have issues, no digestive problems, no overweight issues, no allergies. My mother did it, her mother did it and we are all just fine and dandy, it is funny, what works, we feel we must change. People have been doing it for decades and their children didn't have half the behavioral issues and allegies that the kids now day have. You can't tell most mothers that though

It is recommended to not start before 4 months, but if your baby is still hungry after the formula, a little rice cereal is fine. It is best to make it soupy and try a spoon. Sometimes, if a baby sucks too hard on the small nipple hole to get the cereal out, it can cause problems in the ears from pressure.

It will take some time to get your baby used to a spoon, but don't give up. I had success with my baby using a spoon and it did take a couple weeks before she really took to it. I do know that Dr. Brown has a specific Y-cut nipple for cereal feeding in a bottle if you go that route.

Best of luck to you!

9 weeks seems very early for experimenting with baby food and cereal! Have you tried Enfamil AR? With the added rice starch? That's supposed to eliminate the need for starting cereal earlier than recommended. I wouldn't add fruits and veggies to the mix that early before consulting a doctor (and I'm sure they'll tell you it's much too early)

People have different veiws on this. I always have used it in the children I nanny for about 3/4 months. But then again I also make their baby foods around 4 months too, simply starchy purees ( sweet potatoes, rice cereal and breast milk) that they can eat....

Personally my baby can have rice cerel in his bottle if he wants it. or needs it. I'd think feeling full would be a good thing.

The general thinking around town is too soon.

My baby was a big baby, and everyone said she would need the extra to sleep. Then I read something that says adding cereal to the bottle doesn't help them sleep longer. So I stopped doing it (I had started around 5 months) around 6-7 months and it didn't make a bit of difference.

Plus, now they are finding that the propensity toward feeding babies all these empty carbs is a cause of the obesity epidemic, as well as the uprise of diabetes.

I never gave cereal to my child in a bottle, only with a spoon, and my child didn't need anything supplemental before 6 months, but every baby is different.

Don't do it. Wait till 4 or 5 months and just feed cereal with a spoon. There is just no need to put it in a bottle.

It all depends on the child. A lot of people especially in the african american culture give their kids cereal in their bottles between 2-3 months. If your child can hold his/her bottle and seems like the milk is not filling him/her up I think it's fine. I did for both of my sons. You would need to make the hole in the nipple slightly bigger and add about 1/2 teaspoon to the bottle to thicken it. Just feed it to the baby the first time to see how they handle it. I tell you one thing it will fill them up and help them sleep throughout the night. Good luck :-P

Before 4 months seems a bit soon... It truly depends on why you are adding the cereal.

1) is it due to the hight cost of formula?
2) is it because you are trying to get your child to sleep through the night?
3) is your baby acting hungry/crying for bottles between feedings?

Formula should be enough up until the 4th month. I remember adding cereal to formula when my daughter was almost 5 months, and by six months she was having meals in her highchair.

If you are worried, talk to your childs doctor about adding cereal.
