As a big time Allman Brothers fan, I have never seen them as a southern rock band. Yes the band originated in the south and created a template from which southern rock evolved, but their music touched so many styles and had influences beyond the south. The were / are more of a jam band than a southern rock band.

Skynyrd embraced southern rock & in turn symbolized the south. It could be argued that they to where more than southern rock, but they will always be (for better or worse) the quintesential southern rock band.

As for today, check out the Drive-By Truckers, the new voices of southern rock.

Allman Brothers. Skynyrd is too overplayed on the radio to the point where I'm burnt out on them.
