If it was near the road, chances are it wasn't found in water, so it won't live in the water. At the very least, it should have half land/half water. Some land types (red eft) are terrestrial, and only need a moist envirionment. Since we don't know what type you've got, there's no way of being able to say what care it will need. Depending on its size, it could eat anything from earthworms to fruitflies.

I used to keep salamanders and frogs when I was young (and still did, through when I was teaching, but i knew more about them and what care each needed), so I can understand wanting to have one. And I learned the hard way when I was young, how good of escape artists these guys are. Most of mine ended up dried up on the floor. So I can say with some experience that unless you know what kind you've got, and can set up a tank that will suit its needs, it won't last long. Better to put it back near where you found it.

No, dont put it in the fish tank. Put it in a tank with water and rocks make sure some of the rocks are above water and Petsmart sells Newt food. this should do until you can research a appropriate habitat for him to thrive in. Petsmart also carries Reptomin filters for frogs and newts that filters the water has a waterfall and looks like rock it is not completely submersed so the frog or newt can sit on top of it. These work great.

unless it's always above 80°F where you live a tropical fish tank will be too warm. think about it, tropical fish from from places like south america and africa, so unless you live there that's not ideal for that newt. the fish are foreign to it and could give eachother new sicknesses. not to mention newts need land and water, so you'd need a tank with a land area and water area.

it's really best just to put it back where it belongs.

put it back its clear you have no idea what it is or how to care for it. and its probly a salamander and not a newt. newts almost never get out of water and slamanders live in damp wet areas under trees and rocks and eat worms and so on and would not like being in a tank of water.
On and since I bet you just picked it up with your bare hands you might like to know that it burns there skin if you pick it up your hands need to be wet .

I guess it would be okay to put it in for now with no filter. Just half fill the tank and put a rock in there that comes up above surface of the water.

But it would be best to just let it go in it's natural habitat, if there is one where you live...someone probably let it go...

They should have Newt Pellets at your pet store...

Probably best to release the newt back in to the wild as it is a wild animal. Release it near a pond or stream etc.

Yes if its a great crested newt you can get in serious trouble for moving them. I remember when i was little there was a thing on blue peter about them.
I'd say keep it in some fresh water until you can getit to a pond.

I would put the newt back in it's original habitat near a pond.
