People, in general, are self-centered and not willing to sacrifice by giving up any of their creature comforts for the higher good. I do not drive a car, but, if I did I would be willing to make every sacrifice to help in this crisis. After all, what could it hurt to rideshare for awhile? Or to leave your car parked for a couple of days a week and ride the bus. Or to walk to the store instead of driving. People just don't get it. If we are to change things, each of us has to make a small contribution.

Maybe.
But it would hurt the people who sell you the gas, the people who drive the trucks that supply the gas station/convenience store, the wholesaler who hires the truck drivers, the people who refine the oil into gas, the company who buys the oil from the foreign suppliers...
so in essence we would be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Any reduction in demand will lower the price of oil. However, oil is used in many, many other things than just a fuel for automobiles. For example, plastics wouldn't be possible without it. Also, China's demand for oil is growing rapidly, so in the long run, any reduction here would have a rather minute impact on oil prices.

Yes, but although my country's mainstay so-to-speak, is oil, I wish there were an alternative means of energy. It is not the best means available; it merely makes the rich richer and the poor unable to afford medical care from the fall-out. Oil benefits the very rich only.

Doubtful, there's a stockpile of oil sitting in tanks waiting to be refined. Shortage of refineries, not oil.
