I think the chance of getting pregnant without protection is higher than what you have read. It seems these days that every teenager having unprotected sex gets pregnant. I realize that is an overstatement but from the number of teens asking if they could be pregnant on Yahoo Answers it sure seems that way.

I know in the case of me and my wife (Both of us Catholic and we both went to Catholic schools from grades k - HS) she got pregnant once every 2 years and we never used protection of any kind.

There are factors, on both sides, that can cause low fertility. Smoking can cause low sperm count, it can also cause low egg count. Second had smoke has the same effect. At the time my wife and I were of the age to bear children I was a smoker.

As far as underwear decreasing sperm count, I have never read that and tend to think that is not true. Weight however can have an effect especially if diabetes is involved.

That is correct. You only have about a 25% chance of getting pregnant in a given month. However, sex doesn't have to be consistent. Plenty of girls get pregnant from just one sexual encounter. Weight CAN inhibit fertility in females, but not always. Excess drinking and smoking CAN lower sperm count in a man, as can wearing "tighty-whities" or boxer briefs. The thinking behind that is that the testes stay closer to the body in those types of underwear, increasing the temp of the sperm, killing off some. Again, not always true. Statistics are nice for reports, but in real life, crazy things happen that statistics can't predict. Basically, always use protection because there is ALWAYS a chance of pregnancy with unprotected sex, even on your period. Best of luck.

there are statistics based on when you ovulate, but that is all they are - statistics - numbers don't mean anything, because even if you only have a 25% chance of getting pregnant, it is still a chance - it only takes one act to get pregnant

As for the type of underwear guys wear, yes it is true that wearing briefs that are too tight can affect a man's sperm count, but that doesn't mean that all men wearing briefs can't get a woman pregnant -

If you are thinking about having sex - these are not good ways to evaluate whether or not you will get pregnant - if you will be having sex - use a condom and I would say you should investigate other forms of birth control

Woah..ok. Let me start by saying that all sorts of things factor into a person's fertility- but that none of them can be used as a substitute for safer sex practices. I also came out of a Catholic school system, and from experience I urge you to seek out some reliable source for sex education.

As for your statistics, I can't confirm or deny them, but I can tell you that you have a chace to get pregnant EVERY TIME you have unprotected sex. Obviously you have a higher chance of getting pregnant if you have sex more often, but talk to people who have gotten pregnant their first time with somoene- EVERY TIME is a risk. The only surefire way to not get pregnant is to not have sex. (Though there are a few alternatives that can come close- but if you're Catholic, you might want to think long and hard before you decide to use them.)

It is proven that smoking can lower fertility chances with both men and women, however the statistics can always be wrong. Most women probably have a 25% chance each month, but every woman is different. To avoid pregnancy, use some form of birth control all the time

YES STATISTICS CAN BE WRONG! Some women can be very healthy and try for years and never get pregnant while some women can get pregnant from having sex once. If u dont want to get pregnant either dont have sex or use protection. Dont forget there are other things like STD's u have to worry about also.

First off younger women are more fertile and that it only takes one time to get pregnant. I found a web site that you can learn everything you need to know about getting pregnant. Weight is a factor in getting pregnant not necessarily being fertile.

This is a generalization and yes, it includes women in a wider age range. I'm here to tell you that you can get pregnant the very first time you have sex. I did. Being significantly underweight as well as being obese (not overweight) are both factors in infertility.

25% EACH TIME you have intercourse in your fertile window (there is still a chance out side that window, but it's very small)... so after 1 time you have a 75% chance of not being pregnant... after 2 times that drops to 56% chance, after 3 times we're down to a 42% chance, you see how it works...

if you don't want to be pregnant, don't take that chance.

Probably not. Best thing to keep in mind, if you don't have sex you can't get pregnant.
