I live in S.Carolina and would like to get on a plane to try to conquer my fears, something small like from Savannah to Jacksonville or Orlando, that way I am not on the plane for a long time. Is this a good idea, or not what do you suggest.

No one would go with me, I would be by myself, so if that helps, just wanted to let ya'll know that.

This is deffinitely "The Fear of Flying". I think that what you propose is a good idea. Why? Because you have already mapped out a stategy that you BELIEVE will work. I never had the "fear of flying", but there was a time or two when the plane hit a downdraft and my stomach was suddenly in my throat that I thought, "Oh, boy! Here we go!" But then, the plane continued on like nothing happened; it was like a carnival ride.
You know yourself best; if you have a "nervous" stomach, don't eat just before the flight. You might want a hard piece of candy just to help keep your mind off things. Or, read a book, or bring your favorite music along to listen to. Then, if you are up to it, look out the window, far off in the distance and simply admire this great planet.
Don't let yourself get worked up; take deep breaths and keep reminding yourself that you can do it!
Good luck.

Statistically, flying is safer than driving a car. As my father puts it to clients (he's a travelagent) when you drive, you are in a vehicle that is onlya few metersin front of and behindothermoving vehicles, and sometimes less than a meter fromoncoming vehicles. If you are in a plane and are that close to another plane, then you are flying with an aerialacrobatics team like the Blue Angels. That said, getting on plane to conquer your fears is a grat idea, however, I would reccommend having someone else you trust completely and has flown before go with you. They can tell you what all the noises are and what is happening as it happens. Also, let the flight crew know that this is your first time flying and you are scared, they will do everything they can to make it an enjoyable experience. (Not sure if they still do it, but some airlines used to give first time flyers a set of wings to pin to their shirt when they'redone.) Have fun.

My girlfriend is also afraid to fly but she gets herself through it by convincing herself that she is on the bus. The length of the trip is usually irrelevant because once we are in the air and cruising you don't feel much and the trip is smoother than a car ride. If you take the trip don't be afraid to let the flight attendants know because they can help you and are always nice. Above all remember this is a normal fear that many people experience like fear of the dark and you can learn to get past it.

I think it is always good to conquer your fear. Not only can you go fly, but you can always investigate the safety of flying. I think you will find that it is not anywhere near as dangerous as driving a car, which will give you confidence.

Be sure to talk to your doctor about bringing along meds in case your fear gets uncontrollable.

And enjoy - it is a beautiful experience, you feel like you are so close to God!

I would recommend having someone accompany you - preferrably someone who has experience flying planes and is familiar with all the processes, noises, etc etc.
A small trip would be a good step, but you should have some kind of support system with you to help ease your fears as well.
Good luck!
