Nymphomania was believed to be a psychological disorder characterized by an overactive libido and an obsession with sex. In males the disorder was called satyriasis (for etymology of the words, see nymph and satyr). "Nymphomania" and "satyriasis" are no longer listed as specific disorders in the DSM-IV.
The threshold for what constitutes hypersexuality is subject to debate, and critics question whether a standardized diagnostic threshold even exists. Sex drive varies widely in humans, and what one person would consider a "normal" sex drive might be considered excessive by some and low by others. The consensus among those who consider this a disorder is that the threshold is met when the behavior causes distress or impaired social functioning.

I think it sucks that this is predominatelly a "female" problem. I think it's because of society's views, not medical evidence. Most guys I know want sex all the time, they are just hardwired that way. A lot of women, especially as they get older can take it or leave it. I think this comes from the fact that throughout history women have been taught that to want and enjoy sex as much as men do is wrong. I personally enjoy sex and have it as often as I can, but only with my boyfriend. I don't go around having it with everyone I can. Does that make me a nympho? Alot of people would say yes, I say that's just society's prudish view.

As with any problem behavior, a true nymphomaniac will find it very difficult to control their behavior. This could include feeling bad after encounters, but "unable" to stop new encounters from happening, and feeling a compelling desire to have an encounter, even if it goes against their moral code.
Another good sign is that it interferes with their life to some noticable extent. This could include abandoning friends to have an encounter, putting ones self in danger, skipping work or school, or ignoring other obligations.
Like a previous poster mentioned, it is often caused by a void elsewhere. Often low self esteem, coupled with a strong desire to earn friends and a confused understanding of relationships can lead to this type of behavior.

Nymphomania would be where your thirst for sex becomes uncontrollable. If you are at work, and you slip into the bathroom or somwhere to pleasure yourself. If your lust is causing problems in your life, that is probably nymphomania.

Some people get addicted to sex to the extreme. It could be due to hormonal imbalance, not being shown enough affection while growing up, many reasons. Signs? spread legs and a vacant stare with a lot of drooling, moaning and innapropriate self-pleasuring, 20 or more sexual partners on a regular basis, and constant references to need for sex? lol (Please note, this answer was given *mostly* tongue-in-cheek!)

Actually there are some people out there that really don't like sex. I have heard that these people even have their own web sites that talk about the fact that they don't have sex. It was such a strange thing to hear about, but it was true. I heard about these people from the Montel Williams show, it was so odd to hear.
Nymphomania, yea, hee hee! Lots of sex, it fill a need like no other need. Does that make them needy?

It is an actual disease. Most people joke around about it, but it is a serious disease. A person who can simply not live without sex and craves it and will do whatever they have to to get it. Almost like a drug.

Sacrificing things like friends, work, health, etc. in exchange for sex is probably a good warning sign.
