the easiest way to make barcodes without a lot of expensive software is just to download and install a barcode font. look here.

this works for low volume number of barcodes , if you need more than that simply use a website that generates barcodes..

Make sure you choose the right symbology

A bunch of free barcode label software. You can make your own software if you were so keen. Youd need to know an encoding process for at least 1 type of code, to decode a barcode, you would need to know them all (there are a lot). If you are just looking to print out barcode labels or something, use the above llinked software.

You can start with Code39. It's limited and it's large, but is the easiest to work on (you only need the font) and it's compatible with all barcode readers. Just use the font with asterisks between text, for example *hello world*
