Bartenders see hundreds of ids each day. It's very easy to tell a fake one. Next--the really "in" places have a book that they check all out of state ids. We had one at Paradise Island (Disney World) to check anyone that had an id you aren't used to (like Idaho).

Most bars now are required to have a police officer inside, so if you look underage (no matter how good the id) they might call the officer over to run it under his special lights to verify that its correct. If it's not, be prepared to take a ride in his nifty car and have your parents come bail you out.

However if nothing we say convinces you--fake ids are outrageously expensive. Nearly all states have moved to the credit card style which is very difficult to duplicate (hence why the states went with that style) and it will probably cost you several hundred dollars. The machine has to cut plastic, put holograms on it, and put your picture on it (most states have your picture twice). So anyone that has that kind of technology charges a lot. The best bet is to find someone that looks like you that is a couple years older that is about to renew their license--or will let you pay the fee for getting a duplicate license. You can buy it from them but he/she better look a lot like you and better not live anywhere near you cause you will definitely lose it (and get that older friend in serious trouble) if they notice 2 people with the same license.

And the punishment for using one, usually involves losing your own license (and not being able to drive), in addition to the large fine/jail time, multiple court dates and the lifelong ban from that bar.
