growing up in Louisiana i was always told by my white teammates and white coaches that the reason my and my black teammates were fast was because we had a EXTRA muscle in our calves. Is this true? Are african americans built different than any other race on earth? Please, some good answers.

It is sad that you heard this in a school of all places. The south is not known for its breakthroughs in medical science so don't believe what you've heard. It's all about genetics and environment. Hockey players that have games in Colorado arrive a few days before their game to adjust to the altitude while the players who live there don't have to condition themselves to play in other cities. Black people tend to be more active and leaner - especially from other countries because of the environment and lifestyle / culture. A lean body is the basic building block for an athlete or soldier or dancer, anything that requires a combination of speed strength and agility. Children of athletes tend to be athletes and children of musicians tend to be musicians and children of geniuses tend to be geniuses and children of bigots tend to be bigots and so on. It sometimes skips a generation or two or three. Don't put any stock on the extra muscle or missing bone theory, just keep winning races bud.

Yes, there is some indication that African Americans are faster then Caucasions. No one knows exactly why these results are there, whether it is genetic, cultural or just a fluke of Statistics. The research is somewhat stiffuled, however, as many people are offended by the results and consider the field racist.

Extra muscles - no I doubt that. It has more to do with the way the actual muscles work. How they senthisize energy and the length of the muscles. African American's have all the same muscles as everyone else, they bleed red and all want to find a nice girl to marry, settle down and raise a family with.

You say you were in Louisiana and this is probably where the idea came from. Early Slave owners tried to prove through various really stupid theories that Black people weren't human and it was ok to keep them as slaves. The idea lost it's venom but continued to hang around - an old wives tale.

And there are still people in the world who believe putting a live frog in your mouth and then burying it in an ant hill will get rid of a sore throat. Don't make it so.

African Muscle

From my understanding it was ancient Africans that had the extra muscle, it was a physiological adaptation.
I have no biological proof, but It makes sense their environment required different things. There are hundreds of species throughout the world that have had to physiologically adapt to their environment, Galápagos Islands is a great example.

Hi! I've actually tried to find the answer to this and the closest explanation I found was this:
All "races" of people are built a bit differently. People with roots in Africa tend to have denser muscles. Our muscle fibres are also formed differently than other races. Because of that combination it does appear that, physiologically, our body form is designed in a way that enables us to run faster, jump higher, leap further, etc. than other races.
Now, I don't remember where I found that info but it kind of makes sense to me. We *are* built differently.

I not being racist, but in the past in Africa, people would walk or run from place to place. that was fro centuries and that's why some!! black people are very good at running. About the nasals an all that yeah, it might be true. Other great runners are people from the Nordic countries that are used to breath less oxygen because of the altitude. When they run in a place at the sea level they would perform incredibly better.

A lot of racist people say that we (black people) are better athletes because we are closer to beasts and animals in terms of our genetic and physical and anatomical make up. This is what a lot of people (unfortuantely) mean when they say this. Of course, anybody with a lick of sense knows this is not true.

The truth is this: There has been "proof" that black people with a West African ancestry have relatively less fat on arms and legs, proportionately more lean body and muscle mass, broader shoulders, and larger quadriceps. Because of this, black people with West African ancestry tend to excel at sports like football, basketball, and running.

BUT when people say that in general black people are better at sports, it's not accurate. Not all of us have West African ancestry.

I have heard people comment that when they say black people are better at sports, they mean it as a compliment, not an insult. This may be true, but if people would take a minute to learn history, they'll know that this "compliment" was often used as an insult.

Hope this helped.
