1952 Eisenhower won over Adlai Stevenson. Eisenhower was the General that commanded the European troops. Stevenson was the governor of Illinois. Little know outside of Illinois and TV was still very rare. Eisenhower was the biggest do nothing President in History. He was totally out of his league. Another candidate was Gus Hull of the American Communist Party. The same people ran in 56. Nixon was VP to Eisenhower and won the 60 election until Kennedy stole it from him in W. Va. Sounds like today's news. That just delayed Nixon from being President and being the biggest crook ever to be elected. Voter turnout depended on how the person came across in Newspapers and radio.

In 1952 Truman was eligible to run but was so unpopular because of the Korean war he chose not to. Eisenhower as the commanding general who "won" WWII was very popular and when he announced he was a Republican they gave him the nomination over Taft, who had been the leading Republican contender. The Democrats knew they were going to lose and so nominated a classy noncontroversial candidate, Stevenson who would not drag down Congressional candidates. During the campaign Eisenhower promised to "go to Korea", implying he could end the war . After the election he obtained a ceasefire in Korea with the dividing line between the North and the South where it is today.
He was very popular and the 1956 election was a rerun of 1952 with the only excitement the possibility that Nixon would be dropped from the ticket because of a scandal. (See Nixon's Checkers speech for details.)

If you are referring to presidential elections, there was one in 1948 and one in 1952, not in 1950. The 1948 election was so close that when president Harry Truman went to bed he thought he had lost to Dewey, but during the night, votes continued to be counted and Truman won. There is a very famous picture of Truman holding a newspaper that had gone to press a little too early with the headline DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN. Both the 1952 and 1956 elections were won by Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower. Although the 50's were a decade of growth and an economic upswing, it can be argued that it was not so much the result of Ike's leadership as it was the soldiers returning from WWII, taking advantage of the GI Bill, fathering the Baby Boom, and resuming lives interrupted by the War. Eisenhower played golf with more regularity than he executed affairs of state in the Oval Office. JFK won in 1960.
