It is true that both groups want to see a Palestinian state, but they have very different ideas about what form that state should take and how such a state is to be brought about. Hamas is a right-wing, fundamentalist Islamic group that does not recognize Israel's right to exist. Fatah, on the other hand, is secular, left-of-center, and does recognize Israel's right to exist. Hamas wants to see Israel elimininated and replaced, along with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with a Palestinian state. Fatah is working more toward some kind of accomodation with Israel that would result in a separate Palestinian state, probably emcompassing the pre-1967 West Bank. Hamas believes their goals can only be achieved through jihad, while Fatah is willing to negotiate.
Other than these minor differences, I can't see why they would be at odds either ;-)

Hamas won the elections by the people of Palestine and Fatah wants their party to rule. They both want a statehood but have different ideas on how to achieve it. They differ in ideologies

For the same reason the fascists and the communists hated each other regardless of the fact that both governmental methods are about totalitarianism and robbing God-given freedoms of the people -- they love love love power.
