File Transfer Protocol. The server is an application which hosts the files and handles client connections (Where the user uses an FTP Client) as well as file transfers and modifications. There are FTP Servers for virtually every operating system.

On the other side, your browser is likely an FTP Client.

An FTP server is a remote computer that can send or receive files using the File Transfer protocol (FTP).

When you have a website, you normally send the files that make up your site to the web server using FTP. You need a pice of software called an FTP client to do this. It sort of makes the remote computer an extension of your own computer while you are connected.

A good web client is WS_FTP Home, which you can download free from www.ipswitch.com.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. While most servers are designed to share web pages in html format, an FTO server is designed to share files in any format. Odds are that if you have ever downloaded a free program from the Internet, you did it from an FTP server. You just did not know.

The FTP server does not display a fancy web page or anything. It just holds files. You can see a listing of those files, and then click on them to download them. You can also create a link on a regular web page that you click and it downloads the file from an FTP server.

FTP servers can also be used for uploading files, and moving them between two computers. If you have ever used one of the online file storage sites, it was probably an FTP server.

It is a computer which, among other things, may aid in the transmittal of files to and fro. Like, say, I develop websites. I need to send my website files to the place where I post them online. I use an ftp server. I connect with it (using a piece of software I have). I send a file or two or three. The server collects the file, and places it on the host. The server over there then tells me what happened (it worked, or it didn't) and gives me a list of the files that are stored on the host. I may also fetch a file from the host and get them back to my computer (lucky, for me, since I sometimes muck up a file on my computer!)

A FTP server is an online space where you can upload files then access them from access them anywhere you log in.

Search them in google, can get free ones, very useful if you want to upload large files.
