Hibernate uses less energy then standby, however if you are not going to be using the computer for a few days shut downing the computer will use the less energy.
Starting up your computer from total shutdown not only uses more energy than starting from the standby or hibernated mode it causes wear and tear on your hard-drive, DVD/CD drives.
You may want to consider changing your settings if you are concern about energy consumption---go to control panel, click on power options icon, and change the options that will work best for you.

With any electronic device, if it is plugged into your outlet it will draw electricity even if it is turned off. The way to get around that is to plug your computer into an electricity strip. When you are finished with your computer for the day, shut it off, then turn the strip to the off position. This will cut any electric draw from the outlet. Same thing goes for your T.V., coffee machine, any thing plugged into an outlet. If you have a laptop, it's best to keep it on standby for a longer living computer. On average, a person who closes their laptop will get up to 7 years more use vs. one who leaves it open all day long.
Hope this answers what you need to know.

Turning the computer on and off might save electricity, but the hard drive suffers because it is constantly having to spin up and spin down when you turn it on/off. I leave my computers on all day (and one is a laptop) and I've never had anything overheat and my electricity bill is fairly low. To answer your question, turning the computer completely off saves more electricity than putting it in a hibernation state.

well obviously, if you leave your computer to hibernation or stand by, the computer is still on. rather then if you turn it off, you save electricity, because your not using the power supply.
the power supplie is the main device that gets the power from, so if you turn off the com, that means that the power supplie is off, which means that there is no power, and saves electricity, this is my own opinion, i dont know about yours. who knows, maybe i am right!!

We shut ours all the way off, including all attached stuff (like printer, modem, external drive, etc.) Ours is a laptop. Laptops are prone to overheating. I think it helps not only save power, but also gives the fan and warm battery a break.

Turning it off all the way saves the most.
Though hibernate does not take much more energy.
