Attention!!! The location of our 6/16/2001 (Saturday) Picnic has changed to Borderland State Park, in Sharon / Easton, MA. Please refer to your June 2001 Newsletter for full details.

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Bring your own lunch)

Direction: Rt. 128, Interstate 95 South, exit 10 Sharon, turn left, pass railroad station, go through traffic light crossing Main St., pass Sharon Convenient Mart, turn diagonal right on Pond St., go straight all the way (pass Sharon High, large lake, and continue until you hit the borderline of Sharon and Easton. Turn left and enter Borderland State Park.) Plenty of parking space. We will be meeting at the Visitors Center at Borderlands, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at 2 p.m. we will go over to the Ames Mansion to take tour and see Gen. Ben. Butler's exhibits.

Member/Researcher Joe Geden is going to do a mini-bit immediately following our Business meeting on "Ben Butler's Bells." Joe is doing some research on some Church bells still in use at Trinity Catholic Church in Boston- They were purchased from Ben Butler who brought them back from New Orleans. Joe is going to give us a report on his research to date.

June 16, 2001 Saturday, --- ANNUAL PICNIC --- at Fort Rodman / Fort Taber in New Bedford. Please bring your own lunch.
The time of the event will be as proposed: 10 AM; Tour at 11 AM; Lunch / picnic; Speaker: 1 PM
Member Doug Bingham (of Lighthouse Fame) will chair the event and is working with the Mayor of New Bedford to make this an unusual awesome event. Our Tour of the Fort will be led by Mr. Sam Wagstaff of New Bedford, Mass., who is acknowledged to be the leading expert on the history of Fort Rodman / Fort Taber. This annual Picnic occurs after an extensive cleaning and partial restoration of the mid 19th Century US Army Fort located at the entrance to the port of New Bedford, Mass. Fort Taber was active from the 1850s through the era of WW2. It has been stated that Robert E. Lee had a hand in the designing of Fort Taber which never saw any hostile action . Immediately atop the fort is a Lighthouse which was placed there because the fort obscured the beacon from the previous Lighthouse which was constructed in the 1850s. The restored Clarks Point Lighthouse will show its beacon once more on the evening of June 15 , 2001 , the day before our visit to Fort Taber, this will culminate in a great celebration for the City of New Bedford , this being the third lighthouse to be restored in New Bedford in as many years.

In addition, our featured guest speaker will be Mark Vinet, an American Civil War author and historian from Montreal, Canada. Mark is also the President of the Montreal based CANADA CIVIL WAR ASSOCIATION and the founder of the North American Historical Institute, which presents a series of lectures on Canada and the American Civil War. Mark is also the author of a new book entitled CANADA AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR: PRELUDE TO WAR. Mark's web site link could be found in OCCWRT, Part 2, "Canada Civil War Association." He will speak at about 1 p.m. There will be a book signing by the author after the talk. For more detail, please refer to the coming April 2001 Newsletter. Directions from the North: From Rte 128, take Rte 24 South, to Rte 140 South (Taunton / Silver City Mall exit ) to New Bedford. Take Rte 195 East to Exit 15 (Rte 18 South) (New Bedford waterfront). Continue to the Fleet Bank (on your RIGHT then turn LEFT). Go along the waterfront on East Rodney French Blvd. until you see Fort Taber directly ahead of you, plenty of free parking.

Author Mark Dunkelman (his new book is on the shelves!) has also painted a very large mural on a section of the Gettysburg battlefield and has written other CW books and many CW articles. He is a past president of the RICWRT and was the excellent speaker at our Jubilee #1 Dinner. His principal interest is in the 154th NY. Mark's topic will be his new book "Gettysburg's Unknown Soldier --- The Life, Death and Celebrity of Amos Humiston" This is a very interesting story about a picture found on Amos and identifying his family and the events that followed. There will be a book signing following the talk. Mini-bit speaker:Bob Schipp (from Roslindale) will talk about the books he has read recently.
