Removing the fan is easy enough, but I'd like to remove the heat sink if at all possible.

There should be a clip on two sides of the heatsink. You should only need to insert a flathead screwdriver into one of the holes on the clamp, then press down gently and pry outwards.

I say gently, because there is a chance that your socket 370 processor could be damaged easily if you are not very careful.

If the fan has been removed then the only thing holding the heat-sink is the thermal compound, (usually a white paste). The best way to break the seal is to twist the heat-sink, if this does not release the bond then the use of a flat bladed screwdriver to lift the heat-sink at the edge is the only alternative.

Remember be gentle when inserting the driver between the processor and the heat-sink.

the easiest way to remove a heatsink if it becomes 'glued' to the processor is to use tome rubbing alcohol - i.e. surgical spirit - use a cotton bud (q-tip) to run a small trickle in the gap between the processor surface and the heatsink. leave it a moment and gently twist. I don't recommend using a screwdriver to seperate them, only use this to disconnect the clips from the socket itself otherwise the processor will be damaged.

Should unclip easily. However sometimes the thermal compound will glue the sink onto the processor, so you need to be very careful if it won't lift off.

get a regular "Flat tip" screw driver, put it on one side, and press down GENTLY then pull it off the clip. Also check for the power cable for the fan, unplug this first. Just take your time and have a steady hand.
