Show him a couple of realistic sample budgets for what it would cost him to live on his own and compare that to what you'd like to get from him. At this point, you don't really owe him anything, but on the other hand, he's free to go make his own way in the world. Good luck, just remember this is an issue with long-term consequences for both of you and your relationship.

At 20 he's an adult. You should let him know you need some help with the bills. Of course, if he is expected to pay bills, he may also choose to move to his own place.
(BTW --if he's the only one working -- what are you doing? Because I see that as a possible solution, too....)

ditto the above answer. Make him pay room and board (if you still buy him food) and any utilities he uses. If there are 3 people in the house (you, hubby and son) than split the bills 3 ways. That is his rent. I can garantee it is less than an apartment.

Tell him that if he is going to live with you, he needs to start paying rent - and stick to it. Not easy, I know. If he goes elsewhere to live, he'll have rent, utilities, and other bills he hasn't even thought about, so that's not unfair.
Good luck.

Tell him that when you are forced to move that he will have to get his own apartment. Gas, lights, oil, food, telephone, rent, car, etc., etc..You cannot afford to feed and lodge a stiff.. Twenty year old's have a very limited conception of what it cost to live..And they don't think it should impact them...
