I'd say you need to be in good with the boss. I own my own business. I put in 8+ hours most days, six or seven days a week.
I can find myself working 11-7 on Monday, 3-10 on Tuesday, off Wednesday, Thursday 10-7, Fri 9-9, Saturday 9-6 (and maybe later) and Sunday I don't know yet...
It's called getting ahead. I work when I need to work. I have three people working for me as sub-contractors. One works about 40 hours a week. The other two about 10-12 hours, because they aren't available when I need them.
If they need you until 5 and you only want to stay to 3, they probably don't need you.
Welcome to reality.

Go to part time status (means pay cut and fewer benifits)
See if your manager will let you work 6:30-3 or if you can do the extra 8-10 hrs over the weekend (6 day week)
Teaching jobs end at about 3.

I don't know how your employer works in terms of flex time, but the only solutions are a) like the previous answerer said, look for a job with those hours or b) start working at 7 a.m.

your degree means your qualified...
you need to present this to your boss!
say your get your work done by so in so time your willing to come in early to make up the pointless hours of being there!

they won't always go for it but it can't hurt to ask!
don't forget to ask them

"What steps can i take to get these hours?"
see what is doable
if nothing then
time to look for a new job but when you go on that interview ensure you let them know your hours you can work!
best wishes

Talk to your boss and see if changing your hours would be acceptable. Otherwise, you should find another job.
