I have several rusty areas on my bicycle,
· How can I remove them and preserve them for the future?
· Would a coating of grease work?
· Is there a specific preserver for bikes?

yes, grease will stop water and air getting to the metal so it will not rust.

Sand the rust off, Spray a coat of primer on the area and the spray paint it. Don't just put grease on it. If your trying to preserve it for the future meaning you don't want to mess with it right now then yes. Grease will work. But you still have to remove the rust first. But then you have to get a solvent to remove the grease when your ready to prime and paint it.

Yes grease will protect. You need to remove the rust first with wire brushing and something like Jenolite. If the area is exposed to water impact when riding grease will wash away quite easily. Grease also has a habit of getting on everything! There are better materials to use, but they need more preparation before application.

You can buy from halfords, B and Q etc a product called "rust eater" it comes in a small black plastic container, you brush it on ( the liquid is slightly purple in colour) it will turn black and can then be painted over.Don`t get it on your clothes though. It will dissolve the rust and eat away at it until it is neutralised you will end up with a slight roughness where the rust was though. undercoat and then top coat the metal

Yes.
But if your bicycle is already rusty, you might need new parts.
I have seen chains break on bicycles because they were so rusty, there wasn't enough metal left.
Brake and shifter cables should be greased too.

You still have to keep your bike out of the rain, and if it gets rained on, you will need to re-oil the chain.
I use 10W-30 on my chain.

There's paint that bonds with steel and prevents it from rusting. You might want to sand the rust off first for a nice smooth finish before painting.

Rust needs moisture to form and grow. Oil/greese repel moisture.

You need a rust remover or you need to sand off the rust then repaint.

Yes. If its not stainless steel, then it must be oiled otherwise it reacts with oxygen and oxidises. Me i always grease up my armour and sword before going to battle.
You might not want to grease up your bike! just paint it with hammerite
