Experimenting with the sata data cable for my hard drive and stuck it into the third sata slot. Unfortunately I now can't get it out! I don't want to break anything by tugging too hard, so how do I get it out?

Alternatively-Will the hard drive still work if it is plugged into the third sata socket rather than the first?

i would leave it in there richy, especially if your planning on using a sata lead,it doesent matter which slot you use,it may become a issue if you were setting up a r.a.i.d array, but as your not,it will be fine
if you want to remove it,you normally press down slightly while holding down the clip and then gently lift the sata plug out of the socket, what may of happened is similar to what happened to me with a ethernet plug, the clip has become lodged and in both cases its best left were it is
even if you dont want to use that saya cable, just get a few plastic ties and fold the cable and neatly leave it on the motherboard,it wont get in the way
good luck mate

If the cable has a clip, press it an tug.

If it does not, try gently wiggling the connector side to side.

The SATA port number should not matter.

Look at it with a light if you need. You will see like a bump, it the clip, squeeze it down. I usually use my index finger on one side and press down with my thumb and gently work it out.
