A bit of sad but true facts here. While the expression "curiosity killed the cat" has been used for some time, the origins of the expression are far grimmer.
You see, it all goes back to the book "The Cat In The Hat". The success of that book was vilified by the other children's book writers. Pure jealousy of course but a fact none the less.
So, the motive was, as is not uncommon, money.
The author of the "Curious George" series was so inflamed that he had George not only kill the cat but eat it too. Not an easy thing to do since gorillas are vegetarians. Just goes to show the passion involved here.

No, no. You have it all wrong. Curiosity was the name of the game keeper, who had a curious love of darting my heiney. A sixpack, a hoagie, and a large cage set him straight. *game keeper tastes like chicken*

Same concept as this: if you saw a sign on someone's lawn that said "Keep Off the Grass", would you be tempted more or less to walk all over it?
