Because it is always the Statu Quo here in the US of A.
If it doesn't make someone a ton of money, it ain't worth doing.
Just like this immigration thing. Somebody is going to make a filthy disgusting amount of money off of these illegals being allowed to stay. It won't be me and you though. We will end up paying even more, in the form of higher taxes and lower wages.

The oil companies didn't want Detroit making more fuel efficient cars, but the citizens wanted more fuel efficient cars. What did the citizens do, we bought the cars sent here from Japan, Europe etc. Places where fuel efficiency was already the name of the game. We may never learn. We are more dependent on our cars than we ever have been. We should have been building maglev train systems, light rail and high speed commuter rail, along with exploiting solar energy, hydro and wind power. The technology is out there, but the government, and those who are involved in the government, come from old oil, coal money, they will never let us be as green as we should be.

I just listened to a debate on CNN on this very issue. They are not enough refineries & the big oil companies ARE NOT looking to build anynew ones, why should they it would increace supply therefore prices would go down, & less profits for the oil companies. A small oil company in Arizona is going to build one they got permission so it's not just environmentalists.

it isn't a priority in the eyes of Congress. Never has been. Likely won't become, either.

The past trend since 1973 is that our degree of dependence on external sources of energy has increased, not decreased.

Congress is about gaining and retaining political power. Apparently, energy independence isn't needed to assure that.

FACT — DESPITE PAST RHETORIC, FOREIGN OIL DEPENDENCE HAS INCREASED: President Bush has pledged to reduce our energy dependence in every State of the Union he has delivered since taking office. At the same time, the United States has become increasingly dependent on foreign oil, from 58 percent of oil consumed in the U.S. in 2000 to 70 percent in September 2006. U.S. dependence on OPEC nations for oil imports “has risen to its highest level in 15 years.” By focusing on expanding domestic exploration, he perpetuates our dependence on oil.

Politics. Want to drill for more oil offshore? Sorry. Want to look for oil or gas under Federal land? Sorry. Want to take oil from the North Slope? Sorry. Want to build a nuclear power plant? Sorry. Want to import cheap ethanol, so we don't have to use corn and run up the price of it? Sorry. Want to cut more trees for forest products? Sorry. Do you want to see any more reasons? Sorry; I'm done for the moment.
