it basically means that the two cannot be combined...this is one reason there is a fight for no prayer is school...prayer being church and school being state.....it is particularly defined as:
In the United States, the "Separation of Church and State" is generally discussed as political and legal principle derived from the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, which reads, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . . ." The phrase can be either descriptive or aspirational. In its descriptive sense, the phrase denotes the combined effect of the two religion clauses, in restricting government endorsement of religion, while further ensuring a degree of non-interference with free religious exercise. In its aspirational sense, the phrase denotes a politicial principle of good governmental practice.

Beliefs on the proper relationship between religion and government cover a wide spectrum, ranging between one end featuring complete secularization of government, and theocracy, in which the two are unified under one central leadership. Along this line, a number of distinctions and issues are raised. Perhaps the most primary is the division between the two distinct ideas of government secularization and church independence.

We are a country of many different religions. Which church would you like to connect with our state. Lol. State should be for all the people of the United States not just religious people. Religion should be, but it has it differences.

it means that a religious group can't be a political force as in having a christian party. However, in the USA we don't have a separation, we have a divorce.

In the U.S. it means that you shouldn't make laws based on the Bible.

For example, "Abortion should be illegal because it interferes with God's plan."

This is making a law based on religious beliefs.
