There are several things that can cause this. One of the main factors is that people don't mix their fuel properly and the exhaust port screen gets clogged not saying that you did or notl. If you remove the two springs holding that cover on the muffler off you can clean the carbon arounf that port. There is also a phillips screw head holdoing on a plat ins some models. Remoive that plate and you will see a screen like a proch screen except it is hard. Clean it with a wire brush to insure all the carbon is out and it will allow the exhaust to escape and the engine will run and not bog down.
The other problem is thet your jet labeled H on the carb may need to be backed out a 1/2 of a turn and see if that helps.
The other problem that occurs is that your fuel filter in your tank is very small. and sometimes doesn't allow enough gas to flow through. You can use a wire and grab that line or your fingers in some cases and pull it out gently and check that filter in the tank. If you can blow through the tube and it fizzes out, then its good to hook.
The other problem can be in your diaphram. This occurs when you let it sit up ovetr the winter with gas in it.
No big deal. Just unscrew the four screws on the plate attached to the carb and remove that diaphram and check that needle to make sure it is level and clear. On the other side of the carb is a single flat head scew. Remove that and you will see a small screen opposite of the needle and seat. That screen is so fine that it doesn;t take much to clog it. make sure gas flows through it and your good to hook.
Put it all back together and you should be able to crank up and cut.
Make sure your jets are back to default. Screw them both back in if you have two of them and then back each jet out 1 1/2 turns each. Crank up your trimmer and adjust the H jet in for speed and adjust the Ljet in or out for ilde. Thats it.

Check the Muffler for obstructions, Dirt Dobbers (I guess that the name) love the hole.
If, it sit with fuel in the carb then it may still need cleaned with some Carb Spray. Just be sure you find the little holes and spray come out the other end. I have cleaned carbs like this and if you careful you can reuse the gaskets. Now, the Fuel Pump Diaphram can dry out and not be as flexible, it can usually be purchased alone for about $1-2. It the one that operate the Needle Valve.
Most of the little oil mixes come with Fuel stabilizer today. But, Before I put mine away for winter I add stabilizer to the fuel and run and I just put it up with fuel in the tank. Every Spring it fires up and I feel the fuel help keep everything from drying out.

Man, bad luck. I've had the same luck with poulans. Chain saw, weed eater and gas blower. After having these issues resolved, I've figured out that it's better to spend the money and buy a better brand. Best of luck!

The main problem with Poulan is they are junk. Made by a sewing machine company. They cylinders wear quickly and the compression drops. Next it won't start at all. Give it away and buy something of quality.

The muffler has a small rectangular screen that gets carboned up and creates back pressure when the engine tries to run. Just pull that screen out (I disgard them) or clean it and reinstall if you want. All it takes is a needle nose plier to yank it out. I ve repaired a number of these units in my repair shop. Poulin makes a decent machine. I ve seen many folks get years out of them if they are properly maintained and the proper fuel mixture is used.

A dirty carb is not always the problem. the diaphragm in the carb can most times be the culprit. If you're getting too much air flow, it can choke the carb just as not enough air will, but in different ways.
Also check any air filters you have. When you're increasing the gas flow, you're increasing the need for air flow.

Remove the carburetor, clean it and put it back together with a rebuild kit. There is a fuel filter in the fuel tank, good time to replace it too.
