If you have skills you can do well. Joey Mullen, one of the top American NHL players of all time grew up playing on roller skates.

19 is not too late to start hockey, but be realistic in your ability and how it progresses. Unless if it's an organised league, roller hockey is played on asphalt so you will likely use a soft, low-bouncing ball or worn tennis ball which is good practise for ice hockey but not the same. I would recommend ice hockey gear so that you can use it for roller hockey as well. Unless you live in a very warm climate, the extra "bulk" won't be too much of a factor, and you will be better protected. A street hockey stick with an "ABS" blade can work at the lowest levels of ice hockey but an ice hockey stick with a wood or composite blade wears out quickly on concrete Skates as I am sure you know are different .. wheels don't slide on ice, and steel won't glide well on asphalt ..

Many kids have made the transition from roller to ice. I would try it. If you are serious about it you can be successful. Make sure you get on the ice alot at first. You will probably need to put in a good 100 hours of icetime before you will be comfortable enough to not even think about things like stopping instead of those big circles. I have seen them. That is the #1 problem with roller kids, they make big circles instead of starts and stops.

I started out by playing roller hockey for a year. The first time on ice I went into my butterfly on a save and slid about 10 feet out of the net! I love ice hockey though, it is a lot more fun in my opinion.

Certain skills are essentially the same. the biggest problem in the transition is stopping. stopping on skates is much easier in roller hockey than on ice. there is a different technique to it. also a roller hockey rink is smaller than an ice hockey rink, so you're gonna need a little more endurance and stamina

Some of the skills are transferrable, some things you will have to learn. You should go ice skating a few times before joining a pick-up game at a local ice rink. From there you can see if it's something you might want to try out for school or whatever.

Also talk to your parents because equipment can be quite expensive. I say go for it, ice hockey is awesome.

its moslty the same skills but on ice, i think you should give it a try! i played both, well I didn't play roller hockey on a leauge or anything but we did have pick up games at our rink once the ice was gone! ITs fun I acutally thought Roller hockey was harder but I only played ice before that!! GIVE it a try what do you have to loose?

This is what I did. Once you play Ice Hockey, you will never go back to Roller!

it might be hard, but its worth a try, I love playing ice hockey, and at least you could say you gave it a try, instead of looking back 10 years from now and thinking, dang i wish i woulda tried ice hockey.

Have fun with it man

You should be pretty good at ice hockey...rollerblades are much heavier than ice skates so when you make the switch to ice skates, you'll be flying!

you just have to get used to your ice skates and to the speed:)
