It was indeed an island in the middle of Communism. They got in and out a couple of ways. The main source of supply was airliner. They also had trains that were secured at the first border with East Germany, whether coming or going to Berlin, with East German guards entering the train and staying on until they got to the other border. Lastly, there were roads that one could travel back and forth from the West Germany border through East Germany to get into Berlin. They were probably the best guarded roads in the world for 25 years. No one dared stop, let alone break down. You got on, drove through, got out, then took a breath.

There were agreed upon access routes into and out of West Berlin including air lanes. When the Soviets ordered the Road and Rail routes closed the Allies supplied West Berlin by air.

Check the Berlin Airlift.

They were supported by West Germany and also they were sent supplies so that they could maintain themselves. They had one single road that allowed goods to be delivered. When that one single road was closed for 13 months the USA engaged in the massive Berlin Airlift.
