Wikipedia has separate entries on the big gangs, big bosses and famous conflicts. If you watch the "Battles Without Honour or Humanity" series of movies they are based on the true story of the post-war Hiroshima yakuza wars and are very realistic. They were directed by Kinji Fukasaku who is know to the younger generation as the director of "Battle Royale".

I know a Yakuza. He quit, but you cant just "quit" and say "see ya later guys" he will forever have a connection with the gang. He has tatoos, missing fingers, and is famous in the city for being an ex yakuza. So he sits in his apartment all alone because if he goes out he will be attacked by his old enemies. Yeah maybe in a movie yazuka looks like an action packed adventure, but it sucks, apparently.

I don't know of any good info sites, but there was a movie
made a number of years ago called "The Yakuza" with
Robert Mitchum, and it gives a fairly good insight about
the Japanese mafia........

previous poster advantages astounding answer for making me snigger till my aspects damage. yet in all seriousness, do not hardship about it. Japan is between the most secure international places contained in the entire international. you may walk by the streets in downtown Tokyo previous due at nighttime and by no ability something will ensue worse than perchance a pair of drunken eastern salarymen bumping into you. opportunities are intense as a vacationer you'd be not likely to even are available in contact with a yakuza, and although in case you do they are unlikely to do something unsightly. The yakuza are quite function playing establishments and do personal loan sharking; i have hardly heard of them being keen on any form of violent crime. i have huge-spread quite a few yakuza and maximum of them were actual very nice, neighborly people as long as you probably did not owe them funds. in a unmarried memorable party, quite a few yakuza got here by utilising in the course of the nighttime and pounded on the door of a neighbor who become heavily in debt, demanding their funds. They broke a pair issues and woke a sturdy deal of community up with their yelling. the subsequent morning they got here by utilising to each and every of the friends and deeply apologized for having rudely wakened us in the course of the nighttime. regularly you may spot yakuza fairly, as they are the purely people in Japan with tattoos, and they frequently stand out with their unusual hairstyles, darkish sun shades, and hard demeanor. in case you do spot one, do basically not complication him and he gained't grant you with form of difficulty.
