What you can keep together also depends on the size of your tank, so you should plan what to get by the space you have for (and in) a tank, as well as the adult sizes of your fish (most of what you see in fish stores will get larger!).

Here's a website that I like - it's got several communities by size and aggression level, so you can choose from the species that will work in that type of community. Some species can fit into more than one type. The lower the community number, the smaller and more peaceful the fish. The higher the number, the larger (generally) and more aggressive they are, or it's for a species that doesn't do well with different tankmates. You can more info on the individual fish by clicking on the name. Those with a hardiness rating of "A" or "AA" are the easiest to keep. Just be sure you don't get too many fish at a time, or put more in than you can keep as adutls. http://www.elmersaquarium.com/h701elmers_freshwater_handbook.htm

Depends on what size your tank is! Small tank: tiger barbs, mollies, Betta(1 per tank), platy, fruit tetras just about any fish that won't get bigger than 3inches that's non-aggressive. Chilids are aggressive fish so if you get those, don't mix them with other tropical fish! Large tank( 40+) chilids or a mixture of gourmies, red tail sharks, pleco, Betta(1), silver sharks. Research any fish you want before you buy, find out how big it will get what it eats and what it is compatible with, this will be your best bet!

I would get a betta. Some platies, guppies, and mollys or swordtails to add with him. And a small group of schooling fish like neon or glolight tetras.

White Clouds, Zebra Danios and Guppies is my favorite mix of fish, because they don't need a heater.

For a medium sized tank, dwarf cichlids.
