Before you sand and refinish, try using Howard's Restore A Finish. If the steam heat hasn't reached too deeply in the wood, you may be able to use this product, well to restore the finish. You can find it in the paint and stain aisle at the home improvment stores. You can find it in clear or to match the wood tone of your table. It is inexpensive, easy to apply and can save you a lot of $$ and time in refinishing if it works.

This sounds drastic but it does work. Like you said, heat causes it, so heat will take it out. Pour a little methylated spirit over the stain and light it. Let it burn enough to evaporate, this is only seconds and blow it out. Marks will have gone with it. Give it a good wax polish and you will never know.

What you have done by using heat, is to pull moisture up into the finish (poly, varnish, shellac). Only way to save it is to sand and refinish the wood. Sorry.
