I am planning to open a restaurant and I need your help to get there. Do I NEED a degree in anything? What kind of licences do I need and where may I get them? I live in PA. What steps do I need to to take in order to get things rolling? I really have no clue where to start. PLease someone tell me how I do this. All ears for everything you have. No stupid replies or put downs please.

the good thing is in pa you can serve food in your home kitche...so consider refurishing your place into a place to eat...but generally you will need at least 100,000 and above to start.

As someone who majored in entrepreneurial management and has been in the working world for a while, I think you need to have a reality check. Starting a new business is very difficult and risky with 90% of new businessed failing in the first 3 years, before you have even broken even on your investment. Restaurants are even more difficult with higher up front costs and lower chance of success.
If you don't know the answers to all of the questions you ask already then you are not ready to open a restaurant. You should have a solid business plan if you want any chance of success.
If you need to ask the questions above, I would recommend at least 3 years of experience as a manager in an existing restaurant before you even start to think about your own.

No, you don't need a degree. Just a lot of common sense. You'll need to get your health inspector in to OK you for your food license. If you're serving any kind of booze (beer, wine liquor) you'll have to go through alcohol beverages division in PA. The city council should be told about this and they'll throw another form at you for something. Oh, and then there's the insurance. Get your agent on speed dial. And get an accountant for payroll. And an attorney, just in case.
Fun, isn't it? But it can be done within 5 months. I know, I've done it twice. Email me if you want more info. I miss my restaurant some days and the good ol' days.

You need finances or the financial backing to get things going. No degree required, but it is a good idea to take a seminar or class on starting your own small business. It will help when it comes to getting your "business plan" together. Most people won't even talk to you if you don't have a business plan and a location (even potential location - general area).
You need to know what type of restaurant, and get info on venders that would supply you. Get a location, figure the cost of expences, along with cost of all items purchased. Most venders will help you with the cost mark-up and signage. You need a reliable staff, the meens to pay then and all of the insurance that goes with it - workers comp, health ins, etc.

Lets start with this, 1. what kind of food are going to offer to the public,2 if you are to serve beer or spirits you will need a liquior license, and if are going to cook go to school, that offers you type of menus. 3. Then you need a tax number for sales tax. 4. check the net for what types of foods that are popular.

I would suggest strongly that you get in touch with the Small Business Administration in your state. In our state they help with everything from the legal aspects of business to loans. They have classes that address your questions and mentors made up of business men and women who can help advise you. Also most local community colleges have programs addressing food service, the hospitality industry and small business. Good luck.
