Or is it sufficient just to bolt the front end to the exhaust?

Umm, Yes, it is important. You do not want the weight of the unsupported can stressing the joints on the rest of the exhaust, I can almost guarantee something will break.

I am assuming that you have lost a part somewhere and are looking for a quick fix. You should make a new hanger our of aluminum or order a replacement hanger from the manufacturer.

It should be mounted to the frame. Otherwise, the slip-on might slip-off. Also, it might cause excess vibration form the opposite end not being supported. Finally, if you exhaust system is not supported anywhere else but where it bolts into the cylinder head, it could crack the head area around where it bolts in because of vibration.

The slip on does not have to bolt to the frame

If you want them to still be there when you get back from your ride ,then yes.
Those clamps only go so tight and leverage has a way of making a muffler move around.

all depends what type of bike but if it has a mounting point use it . the vibration and hard bumps would put a extreme load on the pipe and might bend it
