my windshield wipers stopped working. but i was hearing a "click, click, click .." noise when i turned them on, the speed of the clicking varying with the wiper speed. this made me think it was the windshield wiper motor that was bad. i just tried replacing it and it didnt work. I'm almost certain i didnt wire anything wrong or anything. but i also dont hear the clicking now with the new (used) motor. So now im puzzled as to what the problem is. any ideas?

EDIT: it is a '92 Ford Ranger. also, they were working intermittently for a while, then not at all. now i dont even hear the clicking w/ the new (used) motor.

Have you tried moving them by hand with the wipers on?
Maybe they're just stuck???

There is a gear on the end of the wiper motor that engages the levers that move the wiper arms. The clicking noise was probably the arm trying to mesh with the gear. You need to look further into the depths of the mechanism.

Usually, the motors are in plain sight & 2 to 4 screws hold them on with a detatchable electrical set of wires., & 2 couplers that connects to the mechanical levers that move the wipers. Dont know the cost of the motor but no more than an hour is needed to swap it out. Some motors inter-change & should be no problem finding those that do.

right off the motor theres a round rotor that connects to the arms with a little pin that goes from top to bottom threw some holes it has to be set right or the motor will work but the wipers will not i have had this problem with my car and every 6 month or so i have to push the pin back into place

Been there done that! look under the hood, and you will see the little arms that rotate withw the wiper motor, spray them with some wd-40 ten turn the wipers on and slowly gently work them back and forth with your hands, they are probably just stuck, that happened to me, It mad me crazy after giong to the junk yard and getting a motor, then buying a new one my grease monkey buddy told me that trick, Thanks alot you weenie for letting me run around half the countryside first!!!!!
