I would say Queen about Alex Hailey's great-great (I'm not sure how many greats) grandmother. Haley Barry stared in that made for tv movie. Amistad is also good so is Glory with Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. AA history is not just slavery so if you wanted something more modern try The Women of Brewster Place or A Raisin in the Sun (based on the Broadway play, it has a stellar cast) or Rosewood. I might try Rosewood because it is based on a true story and it shows how empowered the blacks in that community were. Malcolm X is another good one. Denzel Washington will have you believing he is Malcolm X. Cooley High came out in 1975. It is about nice boys growing up in the city. The ending will make you cry! Boyz in the Hood is more about the black gang violence in California. I thought the movie exaggerated a bit but my friends in Cali said it was the truth. More recent movies that could give you insight into the black family or how the black family has developed are Soul Food and Daddy's Little Girls.

Roots is the ovbious answer.
You also might want to try The Color Purple. It has more to do w/ male and female relationships at the turn of the century, but it still includes racism and is quite good.
Amistad is good...some scenes are very hard to watch, but it is important to understand what happened.
Hollywood hasn't given a really incredible movie about the Civil Rights Movement, IMHO. If you are looking for something more factual about that time period, check out the Eyes on the Prize series. Your library should have it.

I actually would not say Roots because that focuses on the first real struggle only, getting the heck out of slavery.
If you want to know about the civil rights era, check out the HBO film "Boycott". If you want to know about Blacks surviving the Reconstruction era, check out "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman". Other films focusing on little-known issues of Afircan-American life include "Rosewood", "Beloved", and "The Cotton Club".
For something more modern try "Boys in the Hood".

Roots is mostly fiction and lifted by Haley from others work so i can not recommend it
My personal favorite is Glory, while the character of the Col (the white guy) is all wrong, the rest is pretty accurate to the history
