The finish is already damaged. The heat has pulled moisture from the wood into the finish (poly, varnish, shellac). You will probably need to refinish the top. You can try mayo or toothpaste first but I think it will be fruitless.

This sounds scarey I know but I was given this tip by a french polisher.
Pour a little methylated spirit over the stain and set fire to it. The ring is caused by trapped moisture and the heat from the flame will dry it out without getting hot enough to damage the shellac finish

Actually...try using mayo (yes, I said mayo) on it but gently rubbing and buffing the area...
If it does not work, you will need to re-finish the piece...and if has veneer on the top (which it most likely does..and no, you can't tell by just looking unless you are a trained professional)...you are just out luck...
And remember, just because something is "heavy" does NOT mean it's solid....particle board weighs more than solid wood...

Without refinishing the whole top which may not work either, try toothpaste.
