I had two births that were completely unmedicated (I'm about to have number 3). Fear causes more pain than labor, labor has several different sensations and is intense. It can be interpreted as pain if you let it. Pain is the brain's way of warning you that something is ill or injured. Since neither of these things is happening during labor, pain isn't real, it becomes a function of your fear. You will feel menstrual cramps and cramps that are like diarrhea cramps and sometimes there are regular muscle cramps in the abdomen and back. If you focus on relaxing your muscles, you will get through it nicely. To help practice, think of the way you tense your muscles when you are about to run into the rain vs how you are relaxed when you enter the shower. The result is the same either way (you get wet) but the rain drains your energy and is more uncomfortable because of all the muscle tension. If you think of letting the water wash over you like in the shower you will relax and let your body do the work and there won't be the pain and struggle. I hope that helps.

Two of my children I did not have any drug intervention. But, my third had to be a c-section. I agree with a lot of what everyone says on here, but just know that if you do end up desiring meds in the middle of labor does not make you a bad mother. You will still be able to bond with your baby, and breast feed if you choose. Your baby is not going to care how he/she can into this world, just that you are a wonderful mother. So don't get all stressed about something like this.

I had one natural birth but I didn't do a water birth. Going through labor and giving birth without drugs was really painful for me. I think it was the contractions that was a real pain. Once I started pushing the baby out it wasn't that bad. Just felt like I was tryin to make a BIG bowel movement.

I have had 2 natural births, neither one of mine were water births however with the second birth i took a very long hot shower once contractions started coming to the point where i almost couldn't stand it anymore.....the shower helped move things along and as soon as i got out of the shower i was ready to push....my second birth was only 6 hours long compared to 35 hours for the first time......i believe it was the shower that helped it along so much....the shower also feels great if you have one of the head that you can change the pressures on and if you are on your hands and knees(as i had to be because contractions were so strong i couldn't stand) the shower massaging you feels great as well as the drumming of the water beating down gives you something to concentrate on

I had a natural birth. But, I didnt want to (there was no time for meds). IF i would have planed it and prepared, and had a water birth, it would have been a better (an even more amazing) expierience.

Good Luck!!

EDITED: TOO PREGNANT - to an extent what you said is true. However, the pain IS real, its how our bodies LET US KNOW were in labor, that our uterus is trying to get something out that no longer belongs in our body.

I had two natural births with no drugs, they were not water births though.
I did not think it hurt, and I loved it a ton more than my c section as far as recovery goes. Also with my c section I felt like I missed out on something by not delivering naturally.

Good luck!!!!

I had both my children without any pain relief, i'm not going to lie to you, yes it hurt, but its not really a major pain, not like all those screaming women you see on tv, and afterwards you look at your beautiful child and forget all about it, the pain is well worth the little miracle that comes from it! Good luck x

One of my closest friends had a home water birth for both of her children. On the second birth, she was going quickly, so she had to wait a bit for the tub to be filled. When she finally got in, she said it was unbelievable how much her pain was relieved once she got in. Both births were very harmonious.

No, i haven't as this is my first child, but i want to try my best to take as much pain as possible before resorting to drug intervention. Good luck to you! :) I'm due in November.
