Ok, here's my situation. I'm taking a pass/fail course and would like to know what I need on my final exam tomorrow in order to pass the class. So far I recieved a 55 on test 1, which accounts for 21% of the overall grade, a 62 on test 2, which accounts for 24% of the overall grade, and an 82 on a term paper, which accounts for 25% of the overall grade. The final equal 30%. What do I need to get on the final exam in order to average a 60 for the course? If someone math major could walk me through this it would be highly appreciated. thanks.

We just need to total the percentages multiplied by their weights.

Test 1: 55% and weight is 21%. So, we have 21 X .55 = 11.55

Test 2: 62% and weight is 24%. So, we have 24 X .62 = 14.88

Test 3 (Term paper): 82% and weight is 25%. So, we have 25 X .82 = 20.5

Adding these three, 11.55 + 14.88 + 20.5 we get 46.93 or almost 47. So, you need just 13 (or if your teacher is very fussy, 13.07 against that balance 30% weight) which works out 13.07/30 = 43.57 or let us say 44%

So you can relax and thus score much better.

Okay. Add 41+55+62+82 together . You get 240. 41 is half of 82. Divide 240 by 3.5 You get 60.8 .
You need to make at least a 60 on your final.
When you figure you final tally by writing down your final grade and write down half of your final grade as well. Divide by 4.5.

You need to score 43.567 to get an average of 60.

55 x 0.21 + 62 X 0.24 + 82 x 0.25
= 46.93

this is what you have scored till now

hence you need to add 60 - 46.93 = 13.07 to reach 60

since this exam accounts for 30%, you will need to score 13.07/0.3 = 43.567.

You don't need a math major. A smart 4th grader could help you.

You have a weighted average

(55)(.21) + (62)(.24) + 82(.25) + n(.3) which must equal 60

11.55 + 14.88 + 20.5 + .3n = 60

46.93 + .3n = 60
.3n = 13.07

n = 43.56
