For the wild card maybe, but not the Division. They are still fighting the other teams behind them to keep 2nd place. If they are still 10 games out by the All-Star break, they are done. Too many good teams this year in the AL this year. Plus their division is not as bad as it has been in the past. They are not going to sweep teams like Tampa Bay and Baltimore anymore. We'll see how much NY has in them with these next couple games.

One win does not a sweep make! Don't get ahead of yourself, here. Sure, a sweep would be big, nearly evening up the season series (right now its 5-2 in favor of Boston), but the Yanks have to face Anaheim, then go out on a road trip that includes Toronto, Boston again and Chicago. The next couple weeks will tell if the Yankees are ready to put it together and start playing like contenders. More significant would be getting a few quality starts out of Mussina and Pettitte.

I am a huge Red Sox fan and I certainly hope there is no sweep...However, I am also a realist and the Yankees are not out of it....I would not feel comfortable with our 9 1/2 game lead unless it was around September 25 or so...lol...Every time the two teams play, I get nervous and I have to just keep reminding myself that there is nothing I can do about it, so,I just hope for the best for the Sox...I really don't see a sweep in the cards though so..after the three games, the least we will have is a 9 1/2 game lead if we at least win 1 game...It just feels real nice this season to be in the lead and not have too many injuries so far to dash my hopes..GO RED SOX!!!

There still in it even if they don't. Do people not realize that it is only May. Just waite til all these games start taking toll on their bodies, especially pitchers. The yankees have too solid of a lineup to count them out. Boston will come down and it will be a tight one in October for the division. The Yankees have to they have no choice. There the most expected franchise in any pro-sport to win it all every year. I used to like em when they had the dynasty lineup. When the nobodies stepped it up in the playoffs like Jim Layritz. They'll be there though. Roger Clemens is the spark they need and will help out Derek Jeter with the leadership role.

First of all, its only 1 games, dont get to excited. A 3 game sweep would help, but still only put them at 8+1/2 back. Until the Yankees can prove they're a team to be reckoned with, nothing is going to help them.

Trust me when I tell you this, the Yankees are not out of it even if they lose the next three games. It is still very early in the season and there is plenty of time to get back in the race. The Yankees have a great offensive team and can beat anyone. The big issue right now is their pitching and they will get that going as the year goes on. I am not a Yankee fan so I am responding without any bias.

Not necessarily; even if they sweep Boston but lose to everyone else then who cares; Boston is still in first. The NYY need to start winning their games no matter who they face. If they take two out of every three in a series (which they can do) they will be in good shape. These two teams only play so many times a season so you cant just hope that your head-to-head record will get you back into things.

A 3 game sweep certainly goes a long way, but they do absolutely need to win the series by taking 2 out of 3 at home.

Mussina and Pettite need quality starts, and at least 1 of them has got to get another win. And get out of the game without another injury.

I am from BOSTON! RED SOX NATION owns the ny yankees this year! Don't get your hopes up the division is ours! Wild card maybe, if your lucky! A three game sweep will not happen! Even if we take 1 of 3 that is still a 9.5 game lead!

Every time the yankees beat the red sox they gain a game, and vice versa. I believe yankees are like 10-12 games behind, so they can make up three in this series. But it is not enough, they have to keep it going for the rest of the season.
