Sythetic oil is great stuff.
However, it tends to dry out petrolium based rubber gaskets.

If you do change to synthetic oil, be prepared for lot's of oil leaks on the engine.

If your Passat has the 1.8T, you should definetely be using synthetic. Conventional seems to clog up the PCV valve.
