Choices define who you are as a person. If I am an excellent writer, I'm not defined by the fact that I can write, I'm defined by what I DO with that ability. I can choose to use my gift for writing to teach people, to write love poems, to encourage other writers, to write about subjects about which I feel very strongly.
On the other hand, I could choose to use the exact same ability to do negative things... I could write for a tabloid newspaper, spreading lies with my persuasive writing, I could eloquently bash people or ideas with my brilliant writing.
Just like Michael Moore and Peter Jackson are both filmmakers, they are defined NOT by their ability to create good films, but by what they have chosen to make their films ABOUT.
To me, personally (and this is not true for everyone) I see this quote as saying that we are all given gifts by God, and we can choose to use our gifts to glorify Him by using them to spread His teachings, by using them to express to Him how much we love Him. Or, we can choose to use his gifts for our own personal gain or for negative things that don't please him. He gives us all a choice to do what we want with our gifts, our abilities.
I only included that so that you could have an example of a world view of that quote, not to push any kind of religious beliefs.

I agree with the other answers - that it's our choices that defines who we are. How we use our abilities are much more important than the fact that we have them.
Look at Voldemort and Harry for an example and notice the similarities in their backgrounds. Both were orphans, both grew up in an unhappy home, Hogwarts were/is a safe haven for both of them, similar powers(parcel mouth) etc.
Even though they are so similar in background and powers (abilities), they still differ like north and south. Showing that Voldemort is the evil villain he is because he chose it and Harry his arch enemy (representing good) because he chose it.

In which school/college do they give such homeworks?
Any way, try this,
If you are a school stud. u wud know this:
Suppose, your abilities really are in the commerce stream, that is MBA, CA, that type of thing(maybe full of math), but your choice was the Science stream, Doctor, Space scientist, physicist, that sort of thing, your choice will show u r indeed really "Brainy", to bcum a scientist.
You are doing this choice to prove you are brainy.
Here, the choice overtakes the ability.
This quote is important to you in one way, with your choice, you will show the world you are sum1 to be looked up to, not looked down upon.
In the story, Harry makes a choice of Gryffindor, and this shows he has not got the cunning mind of slytherin, but the brave heart of a Gryff.
In the world, I don't know what to say.
