If the decision is made to have it done, the earlier it is done, the better. After birth, you should wait 24 hours to a few days. Delaying it until the baby is older than a few months can be traumatizing.

Many people argue for the first 24 hours of life. I'm especially against this. At birth, it takes several hours for the infant's body to be able to properly clot, so there's a risk of excess blood loss when done too early. More importantly, there's something very wrong in having one's first experience be pain in something that should provide a lot of pleasure.

My opinion is that circumcision on infants, when there's no medical need, is especially cruel. It's not a sufficient excuse to say that infants don't form permanent memories. If one must circumcise, I would say not until after the 1st week - at least give the infant a week without pain.

See links for some discussion.

It's better to just leave him uncircumcised. He can get circumcised if he wishes when he's older. It is his organ after all.

The surgery is painful regardless of age. Studies have concluded that.

(and the link that Maple posted)

In addition, studies (new one from last month and a few older ones) have found that circumcision reduces sensitivity and pleasure in the long run, since the head always rubs against everything. It also makes masturbation more difficult. Oddly enough, that's how circumcision was made popular in the 1800s by Dr. Kellogg.

In that link above you'll also find the link to the government statistics. You'll see that circumcision is becoming a lot less popular. In some states it's as low as 14% already! The USA is the only advanced nation still doing this to newborns.

If you do decide to leave your boy intact, read the following link:

I have heard that first 7 days are best.... something about the clotting of the blood....but there are so many ways now to circumcise, I hear the "bell" method is least painful. I would never get my child circumcised at an older age, I could not handle having a 3 year old with a sore penis....ick!

Don't do it!!! Take a look at the video at http://www.cirp.org/library/procedure/plastibell/

Is this how you want to welcome your perfect new child into the world?!

Fewer parents are opting to mutilate their sons now than a few years ago. His peers will most likely not have been cut either. He can keep it clean perfectly well. (The foreskin should not be retracted in infancy or early childhood.) Do some research -- there is lots of good information for parents at http://www.cirp.org Let your son grow up WHOLE.

It is best at birth. For medical reasons, my son wasn't able to be circumsized until he was 5. The surgery was more complicated, and the recovery was alot longer, his urologist told me babies recover the best and fastest. I cried when I saw what his poor little manhood looked like after surgery.

NEVER! No justification to mulitate the child's penis. No medical benefit. Leave him natual the way God created him.

Neither, I feel that that process should not be done at all, except in cases of where the foreskin does not retract[phimosis]. Other than that or emergencies, the male child should be taught how to take care of that situation.
