Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. A man and a gorilla have philosophical discussions and it raises the question who is the student and who is the teacher. A great book.

I truly think you could read philosophical overtones into almost anything.

For a science-fiction oriented one, how about Bicentennial Man, which deals with a robot who decides to become human---the philosophy in this is "What is human?"

by Isaac Asimov.

it has also been made into an excellent movie starring Robin Williams (I do not usually like movies made from something I read, but this is one of the exceptions)

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, its such a great book, its my favorite.
1984 by George Orwell, its a depressing look into a totalitarian future.
The Giver by Lois Lowry, a dystopic look at a future world.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, its very philosophical.
the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, it very symbolic and much the same as The Little Prince.

I was also going to recommend Richard Bach so I'm glad someone else thought of him.

For a sarcastic and humorous look at society, read Terry Pratchett. His wry look at the world is always a delight to read.

Richard Bach 'The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah' is a great book to read. It gives a very different and refreshing look at faith (if you seen and liked 'Dogma' you'll love this book).

I have been reading God's Debris - A Thought
Experiment by Scott Adams , c 2004. It is a challenging read, and I just read bits of it. (I'm someone who always had 5-6 books going...)
